More women sprouts business in Africa

A drive to boost women entrepreneurship in all the 47 counties has been launched. A global organisation, Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, is financing a programme to increase the number of women owned businesses.

ANDE has given a grant of $50,000 through Enablis East Africa to the county jobs innovations facility. Under the project, Enablis will launch five virtual offices in the counties in partnership with small business support units that will act as a support network in the counties.

Enablis East Africa regional director Fredrick Kariuki said his organisation will provide back-office support to the network. The project is aimed at leveling the playing field for women through capacity building to enable them win government tenders.

The support will focus on assembling tender documents and raising finance to win such contracts. In line with the new Governance structure, County Governments have been given the primary responsibility for enterprise development. The government has directed 30 per cent of all contracts be reserved for women and youth.
