Nigeria: George Bush to Host African First Ladies Summit

Former U.S President George W. Bush, and his wife, Laura, are to host an African First Ladies Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from July 2 to July 3.

A statement issued by the U.S Consulate-General in Lagos, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, said the summit would focus on expected roles of the “first ladies” in the empowerment of African women.

The theme of the summit is “Investing in Women: Strengthening Africa”.

“Investing in women results in better outcome for entire families, communities and nations.

“The summit will highlight first ladies as advocates for women’s economic empowerment, health and education.

” It will bring together African first ladies, government officials, academics and private organisations, to discuss best practices of empowering women in their communities,” it said.

The statement added that prioritising women’s economic, health and educational empowerment was imperative to national development.

It said Mr and Mrs Bush would give keynote addresses, which would expose African first ladies to their expected roles in women empowerment. (NAN)
